World Oceans Day is a global celebration that takes place every 8 June. A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival. Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean. The ocean is important because it generates most of the oxygen we breathe, helps feed us, regulates our climate, cleans the water we drink, offers a pharmacopoeia of medicines, and provides limitless resources and inspirations.
The day after, on June 9th, we also celebrate Coral Triangle Day. The Coral Triangle covers areas within six countries – Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste. It is shaped like a triangle because scientists have identified that these are the boundaries that delineate the epicenter of marine biodiversity on Planet Earth.
This year USAID SEA Project participates as one of the speakers in three online webinar’s to celebrate the World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Day (Ocean Week):
1. Divers Clean Action with Atamerica online webinar on 8th June, 2020.
The theme is Protecting and Sustaining Our Oceans. The webinar features USAID SEA Project Marine Biodiversity Conservation Advisor Rudyanto, Ocean Campaign Lead Greenpeace Southeast Asia Arifsyah Nasution, Researcher World Resources Institute Indonesia Ines Ayostina, and Director General Aruna Utari Octavianty.
They cover a range of topics from marine protected areas, marine securities, sustainable blue economy, and sustainable fisheries.
USAID SEA Marine Biodiversity Conservation Advisor, Rudyanto, speaks about what is Marine Protected Area (MPA) and why it is important to protect marine ecosystem. USAID SEA in collaboration with local government in Maluku, North Maluku and West Papua provinces develop Marine Protected Area’s zonation and management plan. More than1,6 millions hectares of MPA have been established and effectively managed through the support of USAID SEA Project. 2. Coral Triangle Center (CTC) with the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) online webinar on 9th June, 2020.
The theme is Biodiversity and People at the Heart of the Coral Triangle. The webinar features CTC Executive Director Rili Djohani, Coral Triangle Initiative Regional Secretariat Executive Director Dr. Mohd Khushairi Mohd Rajuddin, USAID SEA Project Chief of Party Alan White, and WWF Coral Triangle Program Deputy Leader Jackie Thomas.
They cover a range of topics from biodiversity, marine protected areas, plastic pollution, and collaborative efforts to protect the Coral Triangle.

3. Wildlife Conservation Society with Khairun University Ternate online webinar on 12th June, 2020.
The theme is Local Wisdom for the Conservation of Marine Resources. The webinar features Dekan Fakultas Perikanan dan Kelautan Univ. Khairun Ternate Dr. M. Janib Achmad, S.Pi., M.Sc, Dekan Fakultas Perikanan dan Kelautan IPB & Ketua Forum Dekan Perikanan Kelautan Indonesia, Dr. Ir. Luky Adrianto, M.Sc., Director Wildlife Conservation Society – Indonesia Dr. Noviar Andayani, and USAID SEA Deputy Chief of Party Dr. Tiene Gunawan.
They cover a range of topics from local wisdom revitalisation, sustainable fisheries, plasma biodiversity, and ecotourism.
